Be careful letting your kids on the lawn if you use fertilizer. My dog is really sensitive to things and if he goes on someones lawn that has fertilizer he gets real itchy. I did some reading on it that was when I decided that I absolutely was never putting any chemicals on my lawn. If you are interested in reading about it do a search on the internet. Our lawn looks better in the summer than our neighbors. They all use fertilizer. It does green up slower but it is more drought resistant so in the long run it does better.

It seems the main danger exists with herbacides(weed killer) and pesticides (bug or grub killer) I think the worms are killed mainly by products like grub x which get rid of the larvae of bugs. Grubs can leave brown spots on your lawn. Think what the chemical that is powerful enough to kill all the grubs can do to your body? I shudder to think.

Once I started reading all this I started trying to also buy organically grown foods as well. These same toxic chemicals are used to produce near perfect fruits and veggies with no bugs and to grow animals for our meat that are fattened up. Did you know that beef that is organic is naturally lower in fat than even the leanest of regular ground beef? That has to do with the hormones that the cattle are given to fatten them up. So don't believe it if your doctor says hormones can't make you gain weight.

I feel as you do. I live in a typical suburban neighborhood though and I know I am the exception. I am the only yard with dandelions, and I do try to pull them all with this great weed popper thing called The Weed Hound. If we were in the country I might just leave them. I have heard there are corn based things you can put down but I wonder about that too. One time we put down an organic fertilizer and my husband got a rash on his ankles from putting it down.

It amazes me that so many people are dedicated to their lawns to the point where they are polluting our water source. The excess of these fertilizers wash down into the storm sewers and into our rivers and streams. How can people really not see the consequences of this. Robyn I am like you. I feel pretty strongly that even if it's only me, that it is worth the effort.

I also try to buy organic. I would love to grow my own food but we are not allowed to have veggie gardens. I do think we have more wildlife in our yard...sometimes I think the birds notice
