A little history, in May 2002 I had a total abdominal hysterectomy for fibroid tumors. At that time, my primary care physician told me I didn't need to have any more Pap tests because I no longer had a cervix and had never had a bad Pap.
Well, in April of this year, I started going to a new doctor, who suggested that I go ahead and have a Pap anyway. So, I had my first Pap in almost four years, and it came back ASC-US. I was supposed to get a follow-up Pap in a month, but due to a family crisis, it was August before I had the repeat. It was again ASC-US, so my doctor requested an HPV test, which showed I was positive for the strains that cause cervical cancer.
In September, I had a colposcopy, which showed moderate and severe dysplasia in three areas on the vaginal cuff where my cervix had been.
I had an ultrasound in December because of an ovarian cyst, and during the test, a 1.2 cm tumor was found the top interior portion of my vaginal cuff in close proximity to the dysplasia on the outer side. My gyn assumes that this tumor is a fibroid, and doesn't feel that it is related to the dysplasia, even in the light of the symptoms I've been having for the past couple of months (nausea, extreme fatigue, alternating constipation/diarrhea, almost constant pain in my lower abdomen which radiates through to my back and down my legs, and urinary frequency.)
I had an appointment with the nurse practitioner at a gyn/oncologist office last month. She tried to biopsy the mass in the office during a colposcopy, but couldn't. She did take biopsies of some additional suspicious areas that she saw, but didn't get enough tissue for an accurate evaluation. She ordered a repeat biopsy with a radiologist in the room to try to evaluate the tumor, which I had last week.
I have a surgical consult with the oncologist on Jan. 19 to discuss whether I need just the laser vaporization surgery for the dysplasia, or if I also need to have a vaginectomy on the top part where the tumor and dysplasia are. (Due to my work schedule (I'm an instructor at a community college), I had to put off scheduling the laser vaporization surgery until I was out for the holidays, but now with the evaluation needed for the tumor, I won't be able to have the surgery until after I go back to work next week.)
Has anyone else had laser vaporization surgery for dysplasia? How long did it take to recover and get back to work. How about a vaginectomy for just the top part of the vagina? How long was the recovery and return to work times for that type of surgery?
Anyway, thanks for reading all of this and your help.
Hugs,

This past year has been one bumpy ride with all of this and my mom passing away too, but I'm determined to not let it get the best of me. My life has been blessed and I know that this too shall pass!
