I have to say that i did not know until after the surgery and finding this site that you could leave you cervix. I certainly did not ask about it since i thought it had to go with the uterus, it needed to go anyway since it had endo and chronic infection--huge cancer risk, most of it removed way back anyway.

Hi Everyone,
I was very naive before my surgery. With all my problems involved my Doctor told me I was going to have a TAB/BSO. That was fine with me at the stage I was at. I just assumed everything was taken & again that was fine. A month after my surgery an older neighbor lady saw me outside and asked how I was feeling & what I had done. I replied a TAH & everything. She corrected me that they don't take everything because they leave the cervix like hers years ago. The next day I got on the phone to my Doctors office. The Staff looked up my records and yes my cervix was removed. Again that was fine with me. All I know is I'm glad it's over with. Sister Katie TAB/BSO 1/2/2001

Not only did I not keep my cervix, I didn't want to, even though there really wasn't anything wrong with that, in and of itself. I am absolutely paranoid about any kind of cancer because it runs in the family (breast cancer, skin cancer, uterine and cervical cancer). I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to have cervical cancer and the best way to do so is to take it out. So I actually requested it and the doctor agreed with me.
Is there a point to keeping it after a hyst that I don't know about yet? - bekah |

Bekah,
Some doctors say that it helps to support your organs. My doctor says the ligaments support the organs. I have read mixed reviews on whether or not this is a reality. Seems that doctors believe one way or the other, but I have not seen any studies on it to prove or disprove anyone's theory. Also some women say that they experience diminished sexual sensations with the cervix gone. Again, I have not seen any research to support this. I had my cervix out and I think I have better support for my organs than before. I used to have stress incontinence...thats when you pee a little if you laugh real hard or sneeze...that has gotten vastly better. As far as sex, my experience is that every works and feels the same or better than before. Of course that is only my experience Becky in OHIO

Bekah,
I agree with you, i was too afraid of getting cervical cancer since i had dysplasia along time ago. So, i felt the cervix going was one of the most important issue. I did not know until later that they sometimes leave it in but that would have not changed my decision. Beth

Nope, I still have my cervix. My hysterectomy was done totally abdominaly, since I have never given birth and have had previous abdominal surgery (to remove dermoid cysts.)
That was interesting about the comment on losing pee when you laugh or sneeze. I always lose my bladder control when i sneeze hard or cough. Beth, I also had dysplasia when i was 16, so I maybe should've had it removed. My doctor didn't ask me. Maybe it had to do with that fact that I hadn't given birth. |

I kept my cervix, this was my choice. I am 36 and was concerned about possible future relationhips of the sexual nature. My doc saw no reason for me to remove it, and he was aware of the class III paps in the past, however a cold knife cone was done, and my paps have been fine for about 10 yrs., thus he considered me a low risk for cancer.
My mother did take DES, so cancer was a major concern, thus between that and the severe endo and pain, we decided the LSH was the best option. Dianne Dianne in NC

I, too, was pretty naive when it came to whether I had a choice to keep my cervix or not. My Dr said "We're going to take, your uterus and cervix" ......and I said "Alrighty then"......and let it go at that. I was in so much pain, I didn't much care what they took as long as it was the thing that was causing the pain!!! As it turned out, they took a little more......the right ovary and fallopian tube. I haven't really noticed any MAJOR concerns, so far.........nor could I tell you about the sexual aspect. I'm still waiting for Prince Charming to come into my life and then I'll test that little aspect of the hysterectomy out.

Hi,
I did not keep my cervix. I was not given the choice. my dr. just told me that they were taking my uterus and cervix. I do not know why they couldnt keep the cervix, but i assumed that she knew what was best. I am a little nervous about the diminished sexual interest "rumor." I am only 15 days post op, so sex isnt an option yet, but I am getting very nervous as to wether i am going to have problems or not. I certainly hope not!! I will hopefully have good news to report when I cross that bridge! Trisha |

Trisha,
I had my cervix removed and didn't notice any difference in the area that you described. I think it's an individual thing. If you have not already asked to be admitted into the private forum "Behind Closed Doors" make sure that you let me know so that I can allow you. That's a great place for discussions like that. Kept Cervix | ||

I had no clue about any hysterectomy options but feel I was very fortunate to have a GYN who was so well qualified in the newest techniques. She suggested that since I had no family history or cancer and my paps are normal that I should keep my cervix. She explained that they used to take the whole thing since its part of the uterus. She said it had been controversial in the past whether to remove it or not but since it has been suspected lately to offer a natural support to the bladder since SOME women had been reporting prolapsed bladders and incontenance (sp?) who had them removed. Also, after my surgery it came to my attention that the cervix provides natural lubrication in the vagina.
My guess is that the some of the older generation doctors stick with what they have done all along and the new generation docs are more inclined to do the less invasive procedures and spare any organs that are healthy. In my decision making process, my Doc made alot of sense and I figured Id take the chance of keeping it since it was healthy. It couldnt hurt me to keep it. If it goes bad later I'll take care of whatever arises but for now .......its my freind I can definitely see having it removed if you have a family history or abnormal paps. |

Re: Kept Cervix | ||

Feisty,
It sounds like you doctor was on top of things. I had my cervix removed because I was advised that if you have problems with bleeding and or pain that you could continue to have them post hyst. I had enough pain and didnt want more. Even though my paps were normal the path report stated that my cervix had little cysts inside. I am sure that did not help. You are right there is controversy over whether the cervix support or not. There are some doctors who say they get better support without the cervix. I think it comes down to that it is an individul thing. Incidentally I had stress incontinence before my surgery and dno't have it now so that is good. It probably depends on your body and your surgeon. My surgeon was also pretty with it and I was given many choices and the information to make them. Becky in OHIO

I think message boards like this are so helpful for us all to learn from each others experiences. We can become the proactive women and ask our doctors about things they may not suggest otherwise. I know my doctor was interested in everything I asked her and impressed that I had been so well "armed" with information from various hysterectomy support groups. She agreed with alot of the things I had asked her about that I read and she also clarified a few things for me too that werent quite right that I misunderstood. I sat down for two weeks prior to my surgery and spent MANY MANY hours reading thousands of posts and made a huge list of questions to go over with her. During my PreOp she covered most of them and then I had my chance to ask the remaining questions.
I hope I can help someone to get thru their time much easier by offering my support. Things would have been so difficult if I hadnt found really good message boards to learn from.

Hi, Thanks for the great website. I had my hysterectomy 4 days ago and kept my cervix after lengthy discussions with dr. He prefers to leave it for some of the reasons mentioned in these posts, and leaves associated glands, too, which help with natural lubrication, cleansing, etc. It wasn't easy as part of my fibroid went down into the cervix and he had to remove this, he also does a cone-type removal, too. I"m glad he left it!

I kept mine. I was worried about all of the issues talked about earlier, but still decided to take it out. My dr said that leaving the cervix can still cause pain and bleeding. Had enough of that! So, to me that was more important then the sexual aspect of it. Now, mind you, if it does interfere with any sexual part...I will be saying the opposite thing.
~Nette P.S. Im glad you found this site Jody. These ladies here are absolutely wonderful!!! And, 4 days post op and your online??!! WOW! I was just leaving the hospital, nevermind trying to function...heheee. Good for you and I hope the rest of your recovery goes smoothly.
